We have reached the milestone of 15 million Car-Pass documents
On 26 November 2025, Car-Pass non-profit issued its 15 millionth Car-Pass document. The very first Car-Pass was printed almost 19 years ago, on 1 December 2006. If we were to stack all these documents on top of each other, the pile would reach more than 1.5 kilometres into the air.
Twenty years ago, there was still a lot of tampering with the odometers of second-hand vehicles in Belgium. It is estimated that at least 10% of all used cars were sold with a rolled-back odometer at that time. This was not only a major problem for consumers, but also for bona fide companies in the automotive sector, which faced unfair competition and loss of image. In order to put a stop to these malpractices, the professional federations of the automotive sector (Traxio and Febiac), the companies that carry out vehicle inspections, the automobile clubs (VAB and Touring) and the federal government decided to work together to develop a comprehensive solution, known as the Car-Pass system. The introduction of the Car-Pass has drastically reduced the number of cases of mileage fraud. In 2024, there were less than 1,500 cases.
Michel Peelman, managing director of Car-Pass nof-profit, confirms: "Today, the Car-Pass provides much more information than just mileage history. The aim is to give buyers a clear and transparent picture of the used car they have in mind. From January onwards, we will also be able to show the State of Health of the battery, which is just as important for electric vehicles as the mileage. In this way, the document will remain its relevance."
Below is an overview of the most important milestones in the evolution of the Car-Pass:
- 01/12/2006: delivery of the first Car-Pass
- 18/11/2016: start of mileage exchange with the Netherlands
- 01/03/2019: inclusion on the Car-Pass of the Euro standard, CO2 emissions and whether an inspection is required after an accident
- 01/01/2020: obligation for importers to share the mileage of connected vehicles and foreign mileage history with Car-Pass
- 01/01/2024: mention on the Car-Pass of the maintenance history and the electric range
- 01/01/2026: voluntary mention of the State of Health of the electric battery
